With the job market on shaky ground and so many unemployed, surely hiring managers have the cream of the crop to interview for every job, right?

Not according to a survey of over 2,400 hiring managers that CareerBuilder reported earlier this year. What hiring managers often thought was the pick of the litter ended up giving them a “Dog Day Afternoon.” In the survey, hiring managers shared a variety of entertaining stories, including:

  1. A woman who sneezed into Kleenex and lined up the used tissues on the interviewer’s desk (talk about a candidate who blows).

  2. A jobseeker who consumed all the candy from the hiring manager’s candy bowl during the interview (now that’s what we call a “can-did-ate”!).

  3. A man who wore a hat to an interview that said, “Take this job and shove it” (on the other hand, at least he didn’t fill his hat with sweets from the hiring manager’s candy bowl).

What’s was so surprising to hiring managers is that candidates who seemed so good on paper and on the telephone nevertheless showed their true colors when meeting face-to-face. It’s a sober reminder that recruiting is more than an art. When looking for candidates with a desired personality, sometimes you need a little science, too.

Hiring managers are anxious to fill a position and return to their normal work. They hate to have their time wasted, and incidents like these are enough to leave them depressed and despondent. So much so that the next candidate they meet may score the job just by offering them a little Kleenex and candy.
