#TweetToRecruit?
August 24, 2011
Did you hear the one about the recruiter who used Twitter to find highly qualified candidates for a serious job? He gave up after he got 140 characters.
Recently, the blog Careerealism featured an article on why recruiters are using Twitter to search for prospective applicants. According to the author of the piece, there are five key reasons:
- Twitter is free.
- Twitter provides substantial reach for recruiters.
- Twitter offers a formal and informal platform for recruiters to open conversations.
- Twitter makes it easy to build relationships and stay in touch with over 200 million registered users.
- Twitter has created a community for recruiters to learn and pass on those teachings.
But is Twitter really an ideal platform for recruiters to use? Sure, it’s free, and your budget as a recruiter may be strained, but ask yourself a simple question as you ponder how best to forge professional matches: If the best things in life are free, why is eHarmony generating more marriages than Craig’s List?
While Twitter may indeed provide significant reach for recruiters, it is hardly the kind of reach that is focused. And once a recruiter has reached an interesting candidate, are abbreviated messages the best way to get to know if someone is a good match for a position?
Lastly, are fiercely competitive and savvy recruiters going to share all their best secrets online with one another? Hardly.
