The Interview: Going for a Match First, a Job Second

October 21, 2011

At JobSync, we often say that job hunting is like dating: You’re looking for a match first, and if both parties fit, hopefully something permanent and mutually beneficial blossoms shortly thereafter.

However, given the current dispiriting job market, many candidates who are anxious to get a job immediately jump into hyper-preparation mode when offered an interview. In the process, they often lose sight of answering the most important question, namely, “Is this job right for me?” Many others are now echoing this simple yet powerful approach to job seeking, and more specifically, the interview, as U.S. News & World Report did recently.

Just as in dating, there are some questions that you need to ask yourself while sitting in an interview:

1. Notwithstanding the fluidity of most careers, can I see myself spending the rest of my professional life at this company?

2. Will I wake up every morning and pinch myself, thrilled to be working at this company?

3. Will working together with this company bring out the best in me, and will I be able to bring out the best in this company?

Naturally, especially in this difficult job market, there are those who say, “But I need a job, not a match – I have bills to pay!” This sounds a lot like the eligible single who worries, “I can’t be picky – I have to get married already!” We always know how this approach plays out. Desperation undermines one’s appearance and judgment, making one come off as wholly unattractive on a date. So, too, in an interview, which will ultimately hamper your chances for getting the job.

So make it your job to go for the match, and you may just find yourself getting the job you really want in the end.
