Six Reasons to Continue Recruiting During the Holidays

December 1, 2011

Common wisdom has it that with the arrival of year-end holidays, December is a poor month for jobseekers to look for employment. However, as U.S. News & World Report points out, there are a number of reasons why job hunters should continue their pursuit of work during holiday time. Similarly, companies should reconsider suspending their recruiting efforts in December, especially given today’s fiercely competitive environment for top talent. Here are six reasons why:

1. Candidates have more time to look for a new job and interview. Your company isn’t the only one slowing down for the holidays. Candidates at other companies have more time at their disposal to apply for new jobs and meet with you.

2. You have more time to look for new candidates. Since you are also slowing down this time of year, you will have time to go through a pile of resumes, screen applicants, and meet with candidates.

3. Your competitor companies may not be looking for candidates. Many companies assume this is a bad time to recruit, feeling that candidates’ minds are focused elsewhere. That doesn’t mean you should stop recruiting. Just because candidates are soaking up the holidays and waiting for a year-end bonus at another company doesn’t mean they’re not itching to bolt their current employer.

4. Networking opportunities abound during the holidays. Between holiday parties and festive dinners hosted by family, friends and colleagues, this is an ideal time to meet new people.

5. The people you meet during the holidays are easygoing and relaxed. Which makes this an ideal time to get to truly know them and decide if they are a good fit for your company.

6. End-of-year budgets might give you hiring flexibility now instead of January. If there is money to employ someone before such funding is lost in January, you may want to expedite the hiring process.

Recruiting during the holidays shouldn’t leave you out in the cold. So supercharge your efforts in December, even if batteries aren't included.
