How to Combat Being Labeled Overqualified
October 12, 2011
One of the biggest frustrations expressed by job seekers is being considered overqualified by a potential employer. When it is truly the case, job hunters have no choice but to chalk it up to yet another of many inefficiencies that are an intrinsic part of traditional job searching. However, all too frequently, being branded overqualified may just be the nicest way a company knows to pare one from the running.
Most applicants figure there is no point to responding to the characterization of overqualified, even if they feel it is not accurate, as there is no way for job seekers to dial back their experience and skill set. However, as a recent blog in the Chicago Tribune points out, there are points that applicants can make should they find themselves in a position to respond:
• My skills and experience make me the most qualified person to meet your needs.
• It is not as important at this point in my work life that I earn as much as I did before. My needs have changed, and I've never measured self-worth by the size of a paycheck.
• I've been able to find satisfaction in every job I've held, as long as I'm making a valued contribution.
• I haven't been a job hopper, and I don't intend to start now.
• I've fully researched the duties and expectations for this job, and I believe I'm a great fit.
If none of these efforts resonate with an employer, take some consolation in the fact that at least you were not dismissed for being underqualified. And that it is only a matter of time before someone appreciates you for who you are.
