Face Your Fears in the New Year
December 19, 2011
Eldonna Lewis-Fernandez is a retired Master Air Force Sergeant with 23 years of service who was deployed to the Middle East after 9/11. She understands full well the impact that stress can have on decision-making, and today she is a motivational speaker who uses her background to help others to confront their fears.
So stand at attention, as this change expert is here to expose the various crippling fears that can afflict jobseekers. And fortunately, she has just the battle plan to take out these enemies and help job hunters advance to victory. In a recent article from mlive.com, she describes these fears:
1. Fear of Success – Lewis-Fernandez notes that when one surrenders to this fear, “you lose faith in yourself and your abilities, and you lose the faith of those who truly have your best interest at heart and want to see you succeed.” Feelings of unworthiness or guilt must be slowly pushed aside by recognition that you do deserve more.
2. Fear of Leading – As Lewis-Fernandez points out, “With leadership comes responsibility, and many are afraid of being responsible for an outcome that impacts not only themselves, but also the people they are guiding.” Accept that people are human and that all leaders make mistakes – they are simply a part of one’s growth and evolution.
3. Fear of Encroachment – Unconventional or nontraditional ambitions may contrast with what is expected of you by family members or friends. Despite what others say, you are the only person leading your life, so stay true to yourself.
4. Fear of Inadequacy – We all have limitations. The choice before you is whether you want to be defined by those limitations or if you want to defy those limitations. So crippling is this fear that Lewis-Fernandez advises that you should “seek out the emotional support to help you value and believe in your own capabilities.”
5. Fear of Failure – As we pointed out in an earlier blog, those who never fail never push nor truly advance in their careers in any meaningful way. Lewis-Fernandez echoes this sentiment, saying, “Don't fear failure; embrace it as an opportunity for growth.”
6. Fear of Compromising Integrity – Establish a firm set of boundaries that are reasonable as well as reflective of your personal value system. And remember that you can succeed when operating within this system.
7. Fear of Vulnerability – Lewis-Fernandez observes, “While it can feel uncomfortable and downright scary to open your self up and expose your ideas and aspirations to others, doing so can be a turning point.” At JobSync, we feel that only by truly opening up your personality will we be best positioned to help you make a perfect match.
8. Fear of Appearing Selfish – Taking care of your needs is not a selfish. You can only help others when you help yourself first.
So take command of your fears, and soon you will take command of your career.
