Enabling vs. Empowering Your Job Search
January 30, 2012
Career coach Laura Labovich credits her parenting coach with opening her eyes to how job seekers surrender too much responsibility for finding a position to others.
In a piece featured on Careerealism.com, Labovich discusses how she hired a parenting coach to help her make her son more independent during his morning routine of getting dressed, making his own breakfast, and getting to the bus on time. In the course of discussing her issues and goals with her parenting coach, Labovich soon realized the primary cause of her son's over-reliance on her: She was an enabler who had conditioned her son to rely on her for every facet of his morning routine.
Labovich contends too many jobseekers make a similar mistake, saying they allow themselves to become over-reliant children in their job searches by giving too much power to recruiters or members of their networks. They’ll turn over their resumes or listen to assurances that others will keep their eyes open for them for open positions. Then job hunters will sit back and wait for something to happen.
In this challenging job market, it is easy to get dejected and derailed from focusing on your job search and surrender control and responsibility to other individuals. One might now even be tempted to ask, "Aren't I doing the same thing by joining JobSync? After all, the service promises to look for a perfect-fitting job for me 24/7."
At JobSync, we don’t enable. We empower.
One of the key aims of our service is to eliminate the inefficiencies of traditional job searching. And while JobSync continuously looks for matches, only you can act on pursuing those jobs when they arise and use your own skills to secure that job. We offer our blog and other social media resources to sharpen your job searching skills. At the end of the day, it’s up to you to reach your job goal -- not someone else who makes well-intentioned but uncertain promises.
