Diminished Career Expectations: What's the Best Way to Cope?
October 27, 2011
It’s no secret that job seekers are having a rough time in the current economic climate. And for many with jobs, the grass sure seems greener elsewhere. For both job hunters and job holders, the environment makes it easy to live with diminished job expectations. The only question now is what do you when you’ve surrendered to such lower expectations?
Glassdoor.com tries to address that problem in a blog that features 10 tips for coping in a period of diminished expectations. Here is a brief rundown of these tips:
- Use positive affirmations to get yourself through the day.
- Teach yourself one new skill a month.
- Start blogging.
- Polish your resume.
- Help a coworker.
- Think about what you really want to do when you grow up.
- Write a job description for your dream job, compare it against your resume, and then make an effort to fill the skill gaps you would need to attain that job.
- Network with people who have the job you want.
- Seek out a career coach.
- Become a volunteer and do something for someone else.
We agree that it is constructive to update your skills and resume and take other actions that can boost your confidence or distract you from your current dilemma. At JobSync, however, we don’t believe you should ever stop looking for a job that is a perfect fit. You simply never know when it might spring up, and you must vigilant not to except a position that is “good enough.”
At the end of the day, do you really think you deserve to settle for less?
