Are You Ready to Recruit and Hire?
September 19, 2011
There is an old saying in dating that says, “Don’t pray for the right one to come along – pray that you will be ready when the right one does.” And the same can certainly be true for recruiters and hiring managers.
When accepting applicants for an open position, companies demand near perfection. They expect candidates to have everything perfectly lined up, from an excellent resume and references to reasonable salary expectations and a solid work ethic (not to mention a personality that fits in with the firm). However, when the perfect candidate does come along, how many hiring managers can truly articulate the responsibilities and growth potential of the open position in question? How many precisely know the salary range and benefits associated with the job as well as how much negotiating room they have? And if they are lacking in these issues, how many can charm and reassure their way through an interview with an increasingly concerned candidate?
The truth is, such an ideal candidate is probably a pretty good fit at more than one company. If a recruiter and hiring manager fail to impress him equally well during the interview phase, that candidate is going to accept a position elsewhere. Despite the difficult job market, the cream of the crop do have choices. Given the average time required to find a job these days, job seekers are going to choose wisely, and any missteps could severely cost companies.
So, are you ready to recruit and hire, or are you ready to just pray?
